![]() ![]() It was first read and loved by the very people who watched roughly half their fellow citizens die. This is the structure of Giovanni Boccaccio’s “The Decameron,” a book that has been celebrated now for nearly 700 years.īoccaccio, himself from Florence, most likely began writing “The Decameron” in 1349, the same year his father died, probably of the plague. Most of the stories are silly, some are sad and none are focused on the plague. In another, a heartbroken woman grows basil in a pot that contains her lover’s severed head. In one story, a nun mistakenly wears her own lover’s trousers on her head, as a wimple. What do these young people do, after fleeing unspeakable suffering and horror? They eat, sing songs and take turns telling one another stories. Wild pigs sniff and tear at the rags of corpses, then convulse and die themselves. Some appear healthy at breakfast but by dinner are sharing a meal, it is said, with their ancestors in another world. The afflicted develop lumps in their groins or armpits, then dark spots on their limbs. ![]() It’s 1348, in the time of the bubonic plague. Ten young people decide to quarantine outside Florence. ![]() ![]() And having struck Peter's side, he woke him up, saying, "Rise up in haste." Above all else, it reminds us that the line between civilization and barbarity is thinner than we would like, and often which side we fall on is more a matter of luck than smarts or skill. And even if the violence and brutality is slightly toned down in comparison, make no mistake: this book has its share of violence, of killing-but also compassion. ![]() ![]() It reminds me a lot of The Water Knife in how Bacigalupi skilfully portrays the bleakness that could accompany a warmed-over planet. If you were all, “I want my kid to read some socially conscious SF about the future of our society as global warming slowly takes hold” but were also all, “Holy shit The Water Knife has a lot of swearing and death in it!” then Ship Breaker is the book to recommend. ![]() Paolo Bacigalupi brings his unique style and science fiction sensibility to young adult fiction with Ship Breaker. ![]() ![]() ![]() He died by an overdose of morphine, which he was taking to ward off the pain of his diseases, and there is some debate about whether his death was accidental, or a suicide. Nonetheless, he continued publishing his writing in periodicals, thrilling his readers with adventure stories until his death in 1916. During his adventures, London picked up many diseases that left him in deep pain and also contributed to his growing alcoholism. A pioneer of commercial fiction and American magazines, he was one of the first American authors to become an international celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing. London also was an advocate of the rights of workers, unionization, and socialism, and wrote a number of novels on those topics. John Griffith London was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. ![]() London lasted a year in the Yukon, and returned to California with a wealth of material for his stories, among them The Call of the Wild, his most famous work, and White Fang, its companion. London attended the University of California Berkeley for one semester, before dropping out to seek out his fortune in the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897. He worked in a cannery, hunted for oysters in San Francisco bay, traveled across the U.S., and sailed around the Pacific, all before graduating from high school at age 19. London spent his youth traveling around California with his family, where he developed a taste for adventure. Young Jack took his stepfather's surname, London, when Flora married later that year. Jack London was born out of wedlock in 1876 to Flora Wellman Chaney. ![]() ![]() ![]() This time, I was a bit prickly about the lying all of the characters were doing - from Darcy to Rachel to Dex. I remember liking this book a whole lot more the first time I read it. ![]() At its core, this book is about what happens when you fall in love with someone you shouldn't - and yet it still feels like you were meant to. I'd watched the movie a few years ago, so it was sort of fresh in my memory. Something Borrowed is Rachel's story, and most of the elements in this book felt very familiar. Reading them again was such a fun experience, and I finished both books feeling satisfied, almost like I'd just had lunch with an old friend. These are my two favorite Emily Giffin novels, mostly because they happen to be about best friends and their experiences with love, life and relationships. I read both of these books way before I started blogging, so I'm glad that the Companion Novels Challenge gave me the opportunity to read both Something Borrowed and Something Blue again. ![]() ![]() ![]() They do this by filtering through possible routes, connections, and outcomes, and selecting the best one. #4 Algorithms are designed to remove some information to focus on what’s important. But in reality, algorithms are almost always mathematical objects that take a sequence of mathematical operations and turn them into computer code. It is typically used to describe a series of logical instructions that show, from start to finish, how to accomplish a task. #3 Algorithm is a term that is used frequently but fails to convey much actual information. Understanding our own flaws and weaknesses is the key to remaining in control. #2 The story of Deep Blue defeating the great grandmaster Garry Kasparov demonstrates that the power of an algorithm isn’t limited to what is contained within its lines of code. From Kasparov’s end of the table, the delays made it look as if the machine was struggling. During the six-game match, the machine would occasionally hold off from declaring its move for several minutes. #1 The IBM team that designed Deep Blue made the brilliant decision to design the machine to appear more uncertain than it was. Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Some of my favourite aspects of the novel included how Waking Gods keeps with the unique stylistic choice of telling the story in present tense through interviews, transcriptions of news footage, radio communications etc. The team have determined how to use the metal giant robot to their advantages, but must also face the limitations placed on them and the giant by international organisations. Be warned however, the return of one character does not signal a running trend in Neuvel’s writing. The previous novel left us on quiet the cliffhanger however, as we discovered the return of a beloved character who had been killed earlier in the book. The premise of the novel follows ten years after the events of Sleeping Giants, where a huge metal robot, which may or may not have been created by an alien race, has been found on earth and reconstructed. With that said, Here is my best attempt, anyways! Though in all honesty, I struggled with writing this review, mainly because the story is so engaging and complex simultaneously that I find it hard to describe it without including spoilers. ![]() So, of course, after tearing through it, I knew I had to write another review for it. Waking Gods was as much an excitement to read as the first book was (read my review of Sleeping Giants, here ).
